My Doula career started in April of 2002 when a dear friend of mine,
Sandy Walter, had a home birth and asked me to attend the birth. The
experience was magical and I knew I had to be involved in another
birth, somehow, somewhere. Her midwife said I should train to be a
Doula. I had no idea what that was. When she explained it to me, it was
like a door suddenly opened and I knew this was “it” for me! I was
meant to do this! I was able to train through Doula’s of North America
(D.O.N.A.) and since 2003 I have assisted in many births in the Middle
TN/KY area. The experiences have all been vastly different~ from home
births and water births, to hospital births with and without pain
medications or other augmentations, as well as cesarean births. My
clientele has ranged from single teen moms to military wives whose
husbands have been deployed during their pregnancy and delivery, to
couples who just want that extra support. All have been memorable and
very special to me.
I am a military (ret.) wife, married to my high school sweetheart since 1987. I have two wonderful grown children, a daughter in
college and a son, who married his high school sweetheart. In December
2009, they blessed us with our first grandchild, Lyric. She is truly a
miracle and the apple of her Nana’s and Grumpa’s eye. Lyric’s story is
posted here on my site. Our daughter delivered her son, Gunner, on June 3, 2011. She had a beautiful, natural birth and of course, "mama-doula" was so blessed to be a part of that birth.
Both of my children were born in a hospital in less than ideal conditions and it was those experiences that led me to explore childbirth practices in America and realize that women need extra support, in addition to their partner, to help them achieve the birth experience they desire, regardless of surroundings. In addition to my Doula training I also teach childbirth education classes.
It is my hope that each woman that comes to me for Doula support will have a beautiful and peaceful birth. It is my goal to support her in her choices of care and birthing style, and to give her the tools she needs to make educated choices for the type of birth she is wanting.
